International Call Forwarding: How and Why

SCutler / 19 July, 2017

What Is International Call Forwarding?

Call forwarding allows calls to be redirected to another number. Traditional call forwarding allows calls to be forwarded to mobiles, voicemail boxes or another telephone number within the same country. Call forwarding increases an individual’s or organisation’s availability. As such, call forwarding is frequently used by entrepreneurs and businesses looking to increase their “up-time”.

International call forwarding expands on traditional call forwarding by allowing companies to rout calls to international destinations. Because international call forwarding uses virtual numbers, those using it can bypass the infrastructure problems often experienced by companies looking to expand into foreign countries (especially developing countries). Virtual numbers are hosted on reliable, secure networks, and so can be depended on, no matter which country you wish to rout calls to.

International Expansion

Not long ago, expanding to another country required a business to set up an overseas office. Today it’s possible for companies to target international consumers without even leaving the office. Using international call forwarding, businesses can forward in-coming calls from overseas numbers to their normal office. What’s more, because virtual numbers can take the form of a local number in more than 145 countries, those calling will have no idea that their calls are being answered in another country – and they won’t be charged any more either. The reduced overheads that companies enjoy when expanding with international call forwarding make establishing an overseas presence easier than ever.

Different Objectives. Different Number Types.

International call forwarding gives users the choice to pick between one of three number types. The number that suits you best will depending on your objectives.

In-Country Local Numbers

In-country local numbers look identical to the local numbers of the country you’re seeking to expand into. This means that, though you may be answering from hundreds of miles away, your number will look the same as, and be charged at the same rate as, any other local business’s.

For this reason, in-country local numbers increase consumer trust and allow companies to enjoy the benefits local businesses experience.

International Toll Free Numbers (ITFN)

As with in-country local numbers, ITFNs take on your target country’s numbering format. In the case of ITFNs, however, your number will look and behave just like a local toll-free number.

Those using ITFNs benefit all the advantages of in-country local numbers. However, IFTNs also significantly increase the volume of incoming calls (since callers know they won’t be charged) and further increase consumer trust by using a number type associated with large companies, NPOs and governments.

Universal International Freephone Numbers (UIFN)

UIFNs are free for all callers to dial no matter where they are located. UIFNs add a “0” to the traditional toll-free prefix “0800”. This format is recognised by many consumers. As such, UIFNs are used by international corporations and organisations, including the EU.

UIFNs eliminate the need set up overseas offices, allow you to use one number for international marketing purposes and increase consumer confidence by using a recognised numbering format. Additionally, UIFNs make it easier to expand into multiple countries simultaneously, and simplify number management.
